Spalletti reflects on career ´hitch-hiking´ to the top as Napoli close on Scudetto

Luciano Spalletti recalled his long journey to Serie A glory after Napoli took another significant step towards the Scudetto with a dramatic win at Juventus.

Napoli could wrap up the title as soon as next weekend after Giacomo Raspadori s 93rd-minute volley gave them a 1-0 victory in Turin on Sunday.

The gap to second-placed Lazio is 17 points with seven games remaining, meaning it will surely soon be party time for the Partenopei, who have not won the title since the days of Diego Maradona.

Spalletti said Napoli would have to wait to uncork the bottles , but he only half-heartedly talked down their title celebrations having had his own long wait to this point. The coach is yet to win a league title in his home country.

O´Neill extends Northern Ireland contract

Northern Ireland manager Michael O Neill has signed a two-year extension to his contract to remain in charge until 2016.

The 44-year-old took the job in December 2011 and has guided the country to one win in 14 matches during his tenure.

O Neill picked up his only victory to date when Northern Ireland beat Russia during their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in August, but they finished second bottom of their pool with just seven points from 10 games.

However, the Northern Irish FA believe O Neill is the right man for the job, and have extended his deal to include the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

And O Neill is thrilled to have been given the opportunity to improve on their showing in the World Cup qualifiers.

When I was appointed Northern Irelan…

Both teams to score at Derby County vs Fulham 4/6 for Friday’s Championship matchup

Market: Both teams to score

Odds:

Now sat within touching distance of breaking into the automatic spots, Fulham will make the trip to Pride Park on Friday night.

Starting with the hosts, while Derby may have been disappointed to have dropped points in back-to-back matches against Huddersfield and Bristol City, the Rams have made a string of improvements since bringing in former England skipper, Wayne Rooney. Tasting defeat just twice over the past two months, only their goal difference currently keeps Phillip Cocu s men outside the top half of the Championship table. Along with an FA Cup showdown against Manchester United on the horizon, the former PSV boss has seen his side continue to shine at Pride Park. Including a thumping 4-0 win over Stoke last month, De…

Arsenal 1-0 West Ham: Lacazette Comes Off the Bench To Win It For the Gunners

Arsenal welcomed West Ham to the Emirates Stadium in the 29th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

It has been a campaign of mixed feelings for both these teams; neither are anywhere near where they wanted to be, with Arsenal far from a top-four spot (10th, 37 points, 27 games played) and West Ham who currently face a very real danger of relegation. The Hammers entered this game from position 16, with 27 points from 28 games, level with Watford in 17th and Bournemouth in 18th. Both clubs went through an in-campaign managerial change as West Ham parted ways with Manuel Pellegrini and reappointed David Moyes, while Arsenal sacked Unai Emery and brought in Mikel Arteta, once the captain of Everton under Moyes.

Beckham´s Galaxy battle to reach MLS title match

The Los Angeles Galaxy, with David Beckham on board and Landon Donovan on song, battle for a berth in Major League Soccer s championship match on Friday when they take on Houston in the Western Conference final.

It seemed an unlikely scenario early in the season for a club that equalled the league s worst record in 2008, and started 2009 with 11 draws in their first 13 matches.

England star Beckham was at the centre of a storm as he stayed on at Italian club AC Milan four months beyond his original loan period, provoking the ire not only of Galaxy fans but also of teammate Donovan who questioned Beckham s commitment to the US league in a book.

Thanks in part to the intervention of coach Bruce Arena named the league s coach of the year on Wednesday the two mended…

Nine arrested in Italian betting scandal

Nine people have been arrested, accused of illegal betting in Italian football, police said on Monday.

Amongst those arrested was the president of third division team Potenza, Giuseppe Postiglione and Pro Vastese sports director Luca Evangelista.

They are accused of being involved in organised crime and of sporting fraud relating to a number of bets placed on matches in the second and third divisions from 2007 to 2009.

One match under investigation is the Serie B encounter between Ravenna and Lecce on April 26, 2008, won 3-1 by the away side, on which Postiglione alledgedly placed a bet that won him 86,000 euros.

Giovanni Colangelo, the public prosecutor in Potenza, claimed match-fixing had been taking place.

If that was the case it would be the …

Dyche laments below-par Burnley

Sean Dyche felt Burnley played into West Brom s hands as they were on the wrong end of another Hawthorns hammering on Monday.

Just as on their last visit in 2014, the Clarets went down 4-0, with Matt Phillips, James Morrison, Darren Fletcher and Salomon Rondon on target for the rampant hosts.

Dyche, whose side have taken just one point from five games on the road this season, conceded the display had been a long way short of expectations, with Burnley having held on a for a battling draw in their last away trip, to Manchester United.

We were miles off it. They were better in all departments. You can t play like that against good sides, he told Sky Sports.

We just got drunk on keeping the ball and playing in front of them and that is what they want you t…

Pulis not letting court decision tarnish Palace memories

West Brom boss Tony Pulis vowed to not let the recent High Court decision ordering him to pay Crystal Palace £3.77million tarnish his great memories of the club.

Pulis was found to have deceived a Premier League managers arbitration tribunal relating to a £2m bonus that was to be paid to him on the condition he saved Palace from Premier League relegation and was still employed by the club on August 31, 2014.

The manager allegedly requested – and was paid – the figure two weeks earlier than initially agreed, before then handing in his resignation to Palace a day later.

Despite losing his appeal and being ordered to pay almost £4m back to Palace, Pulis is adamant he is innocent of any wrongdoing and will one day look to ensure the truth comes out, but he…
