Nine arrested in Italian betting scandal

Nine people have been arrested, accused of illegal betting in Italian football, police said on Monday.

Amongst those arrested was the president of third division team Potenza, Giuseppe Postiglione and Pro Vastese sports director Luca Evangelista.

They are accused of being involved in organised crime and of sporting fraud relating to a number of bets placed on matches in the second and third divisions from 2007 to 2009.

One match under investigation is the Serie B encounter between Ravenna and Lecce on April 26, 2008, won 3-1 by the away side, on which Postiglione alledgedly placed a bet that won him 86,000 euros.

Giovanni Colangelo, the public prosecutor in Potenza, claimed match-fixing had been taking place.

If that was the case it would be the …

Dyche laments below-par Burnley

Sean Dyche felt Burnley played into West Brom s hands as they were on the wrong end of another Hawthorns hammering on Monday.

Just as on their last visit in 2014, the Clarets went down 4-0, with Matt Phillips, James Morrison, Darren Fletcher and Salomon Rondon on target for the rampant hosts.

Dyche, whose side have taken just one point from five games on the road this season, conceded the display had been a long way short of expectations, with Burnley having held on a for a battling draw in their last away trip, to Manchester United.

We were miles off it. They were better in all departments. You can t play like that against good sides, he told Sky Sports.

We just got drunk on keeping the ball and playing in front of them and that is what they want you t…

Pulis not letting court decision tarnish Palace memories

West Brom boss Tony Pulis vowed to not let the recent High Court decision ordering him to pay Crystal Palace £3.77million tarnish his great memories of the club.

Pulis was found to have deceived a Premier League managers arbitration tribunal relating to a £2m bonus that was to be paid to him on the condition he saved Palace from Premier League relegation and was still employed by the club on August 31, 2014.

The manager allegedly requested – and was paid – the figure two weeks earlier than initially agreed, before then handing in his resignation to Palace a day later.

Despite losing his appeal and being ordered to pay almost £4m back to Palace, Pulis is adamant he is innocent of any wrongdoing and will one day look to ensure the truth comes out, but he…

West Ham 0-6 Arsenal: Talking points as Gunners properly destroy Hammers at London Stadium

It s been a while since the Premier League yielded such a one-sided contest as the one where West Ham suffered a horrific thrashing at the hands of Arsenal at the London Stadium on Sunday. It was, on the other hand, a glorious afternoon for the Gunners, with William Saliba (32 ), Bukayo Saka (41 penalty, 63 ), Gabriel Magalhaes (44 ), Leandro Trossard (45+2 ), and Declan Rice (65 ) all finding the back of Alphonse Areola s net.

Not a contest

There s really not a lot to say after a game like this. In short, Arsenal were excellent, West Ham woeful, and the shattering scoreline doesn t exaggerate in describing the way the visitors dominated the contest, from start to finish. In fact, this match could hardly be called a contest at all.

Arsenal kept possession with ease, co…

Michu set for Swansea exit

Swansea City could sell Michu for as little as £4m this summer, .

The one-time Spain international, who excelled for the South Wales outfit during his first season in the Premier League, spent last year on loan at Napoli though he made just five appearances and failed to score.

After arriving at Swansea from Rayo Vallecano, the 29 year old scored twenty-two goals in forty-three appearances in all competitions during the 2012/13 campaign, helping them to success in the League Cup, scoring in the 5-0 win over Bradford City in the final.

However, he struggled with injury the following season and ended up playing second fiddle to Wilfried Bony, who has himself now moved on to pastures new.

He has two years remaining on his current deal with the Swans, …

Vidal: I was right to turn down Bayern

Juventus star Arturo Vidal believes that he made the right decision when turning down an approach from Bayern Munich in 2011.

The Chile international rose to prominence at Bayer Leverkusen in the 2010-11 season, scoring 10 Bundesliga goals as they finished the campaign in second, above Bayern.

The 26-year-old was subsequently targeted by the Bavarians, but Vidal turned down their advances to join Juventus instead.

He was forced to watch on last season as the Germans stormed to the UEFA Champions League crown, although for his part Vidal has helped Juve to back-to-back Serie A titles.

And he does not regret his decision for one minute, hailing the influence Juve coach Antonio Conte has had on his career.

Vidal told Gazzetta dello Sport: I have never regrette…

Brighton star Knockaert reveals battle with depression

Anthony Knockaert revealed depression made it mentally impossible for him to perform in the Premier League last season as the Brighton and Hove Albion star opened up about his mental health struggles.

Knockaert has become a fan favourite since arriving from Standard Liege two years ago, helping Brighton gain promotion to the Premier League in 2016-17.

The 26-year-old Frenchman was key to Brighton s promotion, though Knockaert struggled to reach those lofty heights last term with three goals in 33 appearances.

Knockaert – whose father died in November 2016 – is back to his best on and off the pitch this season, and the winger encouraged others to seek help if they are struggling with depression or mental health issues.

Debut goal doesn´t feel right – Czech hero Ondrasek

Zdenek Ondrasek admitted he is still coming to terms with the mind-blowing moment of scoring the winning goal against England in his first international appearance for the Czech Republic.

Debutant Ondrasek, 30, was the hero in Prague as the Czech Republic came from behind to boost their hopes of automatic qualification for Euro 2020 with a 2-1 victory on Friday.

The Czech s moved level with England atop Group A having played an extra game than their star-studded opponents with three rounds remaining.

Ondrasek replaced Patrik Schick after 65 minutes with the game level at 1-1 and the striker could barely believe he had scored the winner against the 2018 World Cup semi-finalists.

I think it still doesn t feel right, I m happy that I scored, but I don t fee…

Inter Milan claim narrow lead in Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid

A second-half goal from substitute Marko Arnautovic gave Inter Milan a 1-0 lead in their Champions League last-16 first leg contest against Atletico Madrid.

The former Stoke and West Ham forward delighted the majority of the San Siro crowd with his 79th-minute breakthrough on Tuesday evening.

And it proved enough for last season’s runners-up to take an advantage to the Spanish capital for next month’s second leg.

After the visitors had survived penalty appeals for handball by defender Nahuel Molina, Lautaro Martinez had the first chance of a tight first half but fired wide in the 36th minute.
